Wellingborogh Borough Council commits £1m towards tackling homelessness

Councillors at the Borough Council of Wellingborough unanimously agreed to commit an additional £1million to invest in properties which will be used for temporary accommodation, providing residents with a safe and warm place to sleep.

The council’s resources committee approved on Wednesday (6 February) to commit capital, funded by existing capital reserves, to continue to purchase a number of properties that will provide a wide-mix of accommodation types suitable for residents that require emergency housing.

This funding is in addition to the £1.7m which the resources committee allocated last year, which has already provided homes to three homeless families over the Christmas period, with a further six properties in the pipeline to be acquired before the end of the financial year. The council’s 2018-23 housing plan will continue to seek alternative accommodation solutions for households facing homelessness avoiding the use of bed and breakfasts.

The Borough Council of Wellingborough is working in partnership with Corby Borough Council, who will manage the properties on the council’s behalf and work closely with the housing options service in Wellingborough to allocate these homes.

Leader of the council, Cllr Martin Griffiths, said: “We are committed to making a real difference to the lives and future of residents across the borough, and I am delighted that we are able to provide a safe and warm place for families and individuals to call home.

“People can find themselves facing homelessness for a whole number of reasons, and we will continue to invest in properties and colleagues to continue to support these residents.”
