New Town Council Sign an Accident Waiting To Happen?

You may have all noticed the new display board which has been erected outside the Raunds Town Hall in an effort to increase communication between the council and the residents of Raunds.

Putting aside the additional cost after large council tax increases this year, have you tried driving past it and not been distracted?

The corner for the Town Hall is already on an already busy corner.  There is a zebra crossing on one side, another crossing on the other along with the Co-Op junctions and busy school and resident traffic coming off the Thorpe Street junction.

With a large brightly lit sign also being placed on this corner is this simply a step too far and a trigger for an accident waiting to happen? – Could you imagine what would happen if someone ended up trying to read the sign and completely missing a few children already making their way across the zebra crossing?

We’re also told that a second sign is coming soon.  If a sign really is necessary is it a shame that they couldn’t have just put one clearer ‘HD’ display rather than a retro bus stop / train station style one that is difficult to read?

A petition has been created to propose that the signs position is adjusted so that it does not face oncoming traffic. For anyone wishing to sign, it can be found by clicking here

Is the sign a good idea? Should it be placed in a better location? Do we need two of them? Are you happy with the extra costs in the name of communication? Let us know your thoughts below.

The reason it is not on the square is because on Fridays there will be no room for the HUGE MARKET that we have lol

That’s true Carol… Unfortunately there needs to be a good amount of stalls to make it worthwhile… Maybe we could organise some pop up stands that are not there all the time but could be used by the local community to showcase their produce occasionally… Better than nothing and would get people down just to see what was different each week

Debbie Chaplin – Sounds like a good idea. 😀

The point about the good amount of stalls is kind of ‘chicken and egg’ – if there were more punters maybe more stalls would appear, and vice-versa. 🤔

I know from work that there are loads of artisan food suppliers in and around the area…goats cheese in stanwick, Rye bread in rushden chutney, cheese in higham… We need an artisan market…. Local advertising etc basically any local produce, there is a great beef supplier near here isn’t there? And pork I think… What about local free range eggs… Who organises the market and how much do they charge?

Debbie Chaplin Lloyd who ran the sweet stall used to run things, but please speak to Kate at the Council (the Clerk), we’d love to see if we could help you organise an artisan market day.

Indeed, the second one will be on the square. Don’t forget if anybody has any events coming up, let the Council know to see if it can be advertised. Too late for the Brownies and their jumble sale today at the Methodist Church, so please go down and support them.

Lee Wilkes Can we also get a webcam setup to live stream what’s showing on the signs at any given time? – we’ll stick it on RaundsSign.com

Mike Turner great idea. At the end of the day it’s all about communication and letting people know what’s going on (for example the Jumble Sale today). Groups need as much help as they can get (and any extra people who could be signposted to the Market can only be a good thing!). So if a webcam helped, brilliant.

Council tax includes budget for policing as well. Council provides no youth services in Raunds and very little support for groups trying to support young people in the area.
At the very least the council are responsible for cleaning up the areas where the floor is littered with empty canisters and maybe some cctv to deter. Major problem up round enterprise way and warmth park near Asda

I agree it is distracting and possibly in the wrong place, however the information it will provide could be useful such as public meetings on pot holes and where best to spend our money, I’m not sure where the best place for this sign is? Perhaps by Asda or something where there is a large footfall where people aren’t driving.. Also more in keeping with the surroundings.. I feel the modern sign ruins the look of the town hall.. Raunds can still be a nice looking town if our council think more about these things and consult the Raunds people more as I believe the vast majority like our heritage and old buildings and dislike many new additions. Towns grow and with all the new estates I personally don’t think they look to bad but the council need to look into preserving the old parts of Raunds and improve services for the additional population (Drs surgery etc..)

I agree. It is ghastly, and not in keeping with the building. Surely they shouldn’t have been given planning permission.
Driving past it for the first time last night I agree. It is a potential hazard to motorists and pedestrians, and I couldn’t read it anyway.

In seemingly unrelated news, I got a letter this morning saying our Council Tax had increased by something stupid. Perhaps if the local authority wasn’t spending it on a damned sign and was, say, fixing potholes and putting police on the streets, I wouldn’t mind so much.

Looks like the inadequate signs now being used for roadworks, which means that drivers will feel a need to try and see what it says. Pity they didn’t communicate with locals to get feedback before spending the money

I don’t understand why we need an advertisement board when we already have an informative local magazine that goes to everyone’s individual houses? I work with the people in Raunds day in, day out, and that Raunds Round Up mag seems like a great asset to the town!!

I think the new sign is a good idea. I would never of thought of looking in an old sign if there was one. It’s not blindingly bright so can’t see how it’s a distraction and you’ve got to be irresponsible if you drive and try and read it. How many other distractions do you have to deal with on the roads around the country whilst driving. No matter where it is people will moan. If there wasn’t a sign people would say that the council never inform them of anything.
